This Week In Room 204

Hello,
Language:
This week will be a "finishing up" week. In Writing, students will complete their eyewitness account of the meeting between Cortes and Montezuma. They will complete the explanation of their Egyptian artifact. As well, blues poems need to be completed and final drafts of movie reviews. I want to start brand new units after March Break.
Math: We will continue working on fractions. Students were given back their fractions tests today to see their marks. They will be sent home by the end of the week in an envelope along with other marked work.
Science: We will complete simple machines and if time permits begin experiments to understand gravity and friction as forces.
Social Studies: Ancient Mexico cont.
Healthy Living: Growth and development.

Thank you,
Have a great week. I can feel the warm weather coming!

Homework:
1. Fraction sheet (if not completed in class). Due Friday

2. Calcuate the distance of 2-5 of the foods you tracked in over the past few weeks e.g. mangos from Mexico. Try to select countries of interest to you. Visit timeanddate.com (hot linked below). Step 1. Using the drop-down menu, select the country that your food came from under "From Location." Choose a random city from that country unless you're sure you know the city. Step 2. Using the drop-down menu under "To Location," select Canada - Toronto.
Step 3. Click the button to calculate the distance and record the distances in your Home Reading Journal using kilometers. You should create a chart with the name of the food item, the country it comes from, and the distance. Due Friday

3. Read the Toronto Star article: "OSAP diet offers (little) food for thought" and answer the following questions in your Home Reading Journal:
- If college and university students who are receiving $7.50 a day for food allowance through the Ontario Student Assistance Program, how much money would they have to spend on food in a week and in a 30 day month?
- Think back to the things you generally eat each day. Do you think you could eat healthy meals on $7.50 a day? Explain your answer.
- What kinds of things that you normally eat would be missing from your $7.50 a day diet?
- Interview a parent and ask them to tell you if $7.50 a day is a realistic amount of money to spend on food. Ask them what they could buy or make. You may need to go back to your calculation of the food allowance for a week in order to do this. Neatly write down their ideas in your Home Reading Journal. Due Friday.

Extra Homework for the bloggers:
The Toronto Star is asking for Torontonians to "Get involved in the conversation" about making the city of Toronto a better place to be. They have asked people to blog about their ideas. Now I'm asking our bloggers to do the same. Think about what is missing in the city for you, your community, family, and friends. What is needed to make the city better? You may also want to ask your parents the same question. Lastly, what can you do to make Toronto or your community a better place? If you like, you can copy and paste a picture of Toronto from Google or Yahoo Images.
