This week, we'll be working on the following: Language: Reading and writing poetry.
Media Literacy (link to Science - bridges/levers/fulcrums): I will be reading Watch This Space: Designing, Defending and Sharing Public Spaces and we will be discussing the notion of private property vs. public space. Connected to this, we will also be looking at excerpts of the documentary Man on Wire about French aerialist Phillipe Petit, who walked a tightrope wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974. Man on Wire also relates to the story in the Star that we read about last week in which two photographers were arrested in Toronto for illegally entering the sewer system at Ossington. The class was very interested in this story and clearly articulated differing opinions on the matter. Our room is a hub of critical thinking. Way to go!
Math: Introduction to algebra. Mr. Baron will be teaching this strand and students will be acquainted with the notion of unknown variables.
Science: Building bridges and looking at the different forces at play when vehicles move over them.
Social Studies: We will take a closer look at religion in ancient Mexico (Aztecs).

Language/Media
Students will be tracking news stories throughout the week in their Home Reading Journals. From Monday to Thursday evening, students will write a short paragraph about one news story reported in the Toronto Star and a short paragraph about one news story reported in a different newspaper in a different city. The second newspaper can be Canadian, or an international paper (in English or another language if it is understood). Please follow the guidelines below:
- When writing your paragraph, write in full sentences and make sure you answer the 5 Ws (who, what, where, when, and why).
- Try to choose a "bigger" national or international story this week, rather than a local crime story, etc.
- You may use the Toronto Star each night, but you must use a different newspaper each night for your second newspaper.
- You may use another local paper other than the Star, but the Star has a free, user-friendly web site, so this is your best bet. I've hot linked newspapers at the top right-hand side of this blog.
- include the date on the top, right-hand side of your page and do not forget to mention the name of the paper and the city it comes from.
