The original infomercial for this drove me crazy (along with Vince's Sham Wow commercial). I do like this remix, however. What commercials do you find memorable for better or worse?
Here's what we're working on this week:
Language: Reading/Writing - We will begin looking at Persuasive Writing. Students will begin reading different forms of persuasive writing and will have the opportunity to discuss these texts and share their own opinions.
Media Literacy - This week, we will continue looking at bias in advertisements. As well, we will connect media literacy with Persuasive Writing. Students will look at the different tactics used by advertisers in their attempt to make us buy products.
Math: We are starting a short, but sweet unit on Probability. There are four strands of Math to teach in the second term (which is a very short term, broken up by a holiday). I am skimming over certain areas so that we can go deeper into others. Fractions, decimals, and measurement require more time and I feel that students deserve more time to work in these areas of Math.
Science: The beginning of the week will be spent wrapping up the Human Body. By the end of the week, we will begin Energy Conservation. We will start by looking at non-renewable energy (coal, gas, and oil). If time permits this week, students will conduct an experiment looking at the effects of an oil spill.
Social Studies: We will wrap up Canadian Government. I would like to continue working on our classroom election throughout the year. It will give students the opportunity to see first-hand how elections work. I hope that we can begin Ancient Civilizations this week. Hello Egypt!
Homework
1. Monday, your child will receive back his or her rough draft of their explanation of how one of the human organ system works. They are to write their good copy at home and return it this Friday.
2. Students will also be given the traced outline of their body, which they created at school. For Friday, they are to draw the organs connected to the system which they wrote their explanations for (e.g. if they wrote about the digestive system, they should draw and label the mouth, esophagus, stomach, etc.).
3. Students will read "The Visitor," from their Nelson Language Arts reader. In their Home Reading Journal, they will respond to the After You Read prompt on pg. 27 - "Read between the lines." Due this Friday.
4. For next Monday (Nov. 30th) students will describe a commercial that appeals to them, and one that they can't stand. They will answer questions on a double-sided sheet.
* To balance the workload, I have decided not to assign Math homework this week, including Math Basics. We'll carry on next week.

Core English Corner - This Week in Room 210
We will be starting a spelling program. Students will be given a word list which they will be tested on this Friday. For homework, they must write a short story of their own choice, using all of the words from the word list.
