Today we had another hands-on capacity activity. Students were put into groups of three. Each group was given four different shaped containers. Together, they had to put the containers in order from least to greatest capacity. Next, they had to estimate how many scoops of water would fill each container. Lastly, they checked their estimates by filling the containers up with water. Were their predictions correct? This activity not only helped reinforce the fact that capacity means "how much a container will hold at the most," but also forced students to reach consensus with their group. Messy, yes, but worth it.
