Our class listened to an audio recording of Strega Nona. I strongly suggest you borrow books with CDs at your local library. They are a great way to support readers who may be struggling with some vocabulary and they're also very entertaining. Ask a librarian if you cannot find them hanging in bags in the childrens' section.

Here's what's cooking this week...
Language: Reading - Guided Reading groups continue working on text features. We will begin working on inferring. This is a big part of comprehension, but fortunately Clairlea as a school worked hard on inferring last year, so students should have a great deal of prior knowledge. Students will be reading a variety of texts (including media texts) in order to make logical predictions based on what they know. We will also continue reading fables as we focus on "the moral of the story."
Writing: Word Study continues with prefixes derived from the Greek language. We will also work on the vowel diagraph 'ea' as in breath. Friendly letter writing wraps up this week.
Media Literacy: The history of communications continues with cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphs. Students will make their own papyrus. We will look for similarities and differences between ancient pictographs, petroglyphs and hieroglyphs.
Math: We will be wrapping up Data Management and moving into fractions. I was glad the class cheered when I told them this last week. "Hurrah for fractions!" Students will be creating graphs for the weather data they've been collecting this past month in their Weather Logs.
Social Studies: Grade 2s will be looking at Chinese/Lunar New Year (Celebrations and Traditions), while the Grade 3s will continue investigation First Nations people in Upper Canada.
Homework:
1. Reading Response Journals: Write a friendly letter either to the author of your book, or a character. All is explained in handout.
2. Choose a new activity in your Home Word Book to help with your new words to know.
3. Graphing questions
4. Grade 3s will be bringing home a duotang with EQAO questions and responses from 2010 for Reading and Writing. Each week, students in Grade 3 will be asked to answer questions and write a short response comparing their response to the exemplars. Grade 3s will have until the following Monday to work on this. This EQAO duotang must come back each Monday so that we can work on answering questions. Thanks.
