Noriko the Clown

What a wonderful field trip we had at Eglinton Square Library today. We had no idea what a wonderful treat we had in store with Noriko the Clown. I still can't believe how she managed to entertain us with her clowning routine, teach the students some mime techniques, and still perform a one-woman play (The Funny Little Woman). She is a very interesting woman. As well as being an actor, she is also a visual artist.

Noriko studied ballet, modern and jazz dance in Japan and New York before studying mime/physical movement under noted mime artist Mamako Yoneyama.

She taught ballet and mime in her studio in Tokyo; was a mime instructor at a Japanese university; and choreographed works for other actors and dancers.

She has appeared on many television specials and commercials, and did numerous promotional works for both large and small companies in Japan.

As the artistic director and principal performer of Shamingu Theatre Company, Noriko has performed in Japan, Europe, and Canada.

As a clown, mime and Silent Storyteller, she has performed at a variety of events and places since moving here in 1994: indoor and outdoor festivals, schools, libraries, television, hospitals, museums, corporate events, daycares, theatres, conventions, seniors’ homes, cultural events, parties, etc.

Noriko was invited to perform at the 1996 Harbourfront Storytelling Festival. Her beautiful performance of ‘Grandmother’ choreographed to music, brought tears of joy to the audience.
