Welcome families,Thank you for visiting our classroom blog. In the weeks to come, you will find more information and news about what we are doing in our class. If you are reading this, I trust that you received my "Welcome Back" letter with important information about our first week back at school.
Here are some of the things we will be working on in class this week:
Language - Writing: Personal narratives. Students will write about what they treasure the most and will also respond to the book The Best Part of Me, by contemplating the best part of him or herself.
Media Literacy: We will discuss the terms "media" and "media text." Students will sort and classify a variety of media texts. They will also write about their own exposure to media texts.
Reading: I am beginning a series of focussed mini lessons connected to independent reading. Students will be given time for independent reading in class either reading a classroom book, or a book from home. I am starting a sign-out system for classroom books this year for interested students. Our read aloud book will be Rules by Cynthia Lord.
Math: Number Sense and Numeration - We will be reviewing addition with regrouping, multi-digit subtraction, and place value. Students will be using base ten blocks to help them understand numbers up to 10 000.
Science: Introduction to the human body. This week, we are looking at the different types of systems and the cell.
Social Studies: We will be reviewing the map of North and South America, learning about landforms. Students will be introduced to the three levels of government in Canada.
We'll also be getting a little crafty making wind spinners with recycled pop bottles. It should be a great week. I'm so happy to be teaching the Fantastic Fives.
