A parent asked me about the math homework today. Our class has been using the 10-frame mats in class and I reviewed the math homework a second time with them today. Here's what to do:
1. Find a bunch of small items your child can estimate e.g. pennies, beads, erasers, buttons, etc.
2. Dump them into a pile and ask your child to estimate how many pieces are there. Ask them if their estimate seems reasonable - especially if they give you a very low or high number.
3. Using the 10-frame mat, have your child count out the pieces. After they count out ten, see if they can arrive at a closer estimate for what remains (adding the ten pieces already on the 10-frame).
This activity is designed to help students grouping numbers into tens and arriving at reasonable estimates. You don't need to send proof that the activity was completed. We can share stories on Friday.
Secondly, please consider sending in a request for a Clairlea art calendar. I know $15 may seem expensive, but most mall-bought calendars cost over $20. Please read over the handout that came home today and send in the bottom portion if you are interested. I know M. Demeter (your child's art teacher) works incredibly hard on creative art projects throughout the school and the money will make a difference with art supplies.
