Room 108 loves math! Every morning, we spend over an hour learning math concepts, working on problems, and getting our hands on concrete materials. Here are some pictures of some of our Grade 1s working on patterning in their math journals last week. We have now finished our Patterning unit and have moved into Number Sense. Today, students each made a "five set" using the same connecting cubes you see in these pictures. We then put them in a basket and each child estimated how many little cubes were in the basket. We talked about a reasonable estimation, versus an unreasonable estimation. Using the big hundreds chart, we skip counted by fives as we pulled out our five sets. Who was the math wizard of the day? We crowned
Kyra Queen Estimation today. She estimated that there were 75 cubes in the basket (there were 80).
William, who estimated 100 was named the Crown Prince of Estimation. Please see the short video at the bottom for an idea on how you can get your child thinking about reasonable estimations at home. Talk about your experiences when you need to estimate (grocery shopping, measuring around the home, etc), and how estimating makes life easier. Children will love math if they can relate to it in practical terms.
