This week, the Grade 2s were joined by the 3s in Science as we built water filters using layers of sand, stone, charcoal, and cotton balls. The object was to predict how much oil would be filtered out of the water using this method. Predictions were made and the following day, students took a close look at the water using magnifying glasses to see how much oil made it to the bottom. We've been learning about oil spills on a large scale and we will be moving towards water pollution on a local level this week.

Talk about filters around your home. Brew some coffee or make a cup of tea in a clear glass mug if possible and let your child see how different filters work. Rip the tea bag apart afterwards to look at the tea leaves.
