Sorry for the lack of posting last week. It was very busy both in the classroom and with family events. The time just slipped by. It took longer than I expected for our class to complete their animal reports. The good news is that students now have a good sense of researching basics and report writing. The few students who have to complete their work will hopefully be able to finish it this week in class.
Here's what we're working on this week:
Language: The whole school is working on shoe-themed projects as initiated by our wonderful Art teacher Mme. Demeter. I read two versions of The Red Shoes to the class last week. They came up with text connections as part of their written responses to the stories. They also wrote shoe poems and a couple of students who completed everything began to write their own shoe stories. This week, we will begin narrative writing and we will be taking a close look at the techniques authors use to make their writing come alive on the page. We will also be learning about the basics of creative writing.
Math: We will return to multiplication and division by looking at groups or sets of numbers and how we can divide larger numbers into smaller groups.
Science: We discovered that starlings are nesting in front of the school. Although I was hoping to wrap up our animal studies, we will continue a little bit longer as we learn about starlings.
Social Studies: Finally, we will begin constructing our booklets for the cultural studies project that were completed at home a while back.
That's all for now. I could really use milk or juice cartons for bird homes. The 2L size is great, but we'll take anything for now.
Thanks,
Erin Hawkins
